COLUMBIA, KY - Trailing 28-27 with less than 10 seconds to play in the game, Lindsey Wilson College freshman quarterback Branden Cresap completed a pass to his classmate Chaz Barnes in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown that ended a wild game and gave the Blue Raiders a 34-28 win against Belhaven (MS) University on Saturday at Blue Raider Stadium.

The catch was incredible, but the story leading up to how it all went down was just as exciting.

Lindsey Wilson, now 2-1 overall, led Belhaven (2-2) 21-0 halfway through the second quarter.

To get to that point, Cresap opened the scoring in the game with a 32-yard touchdown strike to Barnes in the first quarter, followed by a 33-yard scamper for a touchdown by freshman Cortez Barber in the second quarter and another Cresap to Barnes touchdown on a 30-yard pass.

Leading 21-0, the Blue Raiders didn't give up a score until Belhaven junior Justin Gaines took a handoff from junior quarterback Alex Wilson for a 46-yard touchdown run that made the score 21-7 at halftime.

Gaines' long run came on the heels of Barnes' second touchdown catch as the Belhaven offense went into an up-tempo running style, moving the ball quickly with handoffs to Gaines and junior Joshua Hawkins.

Hawkins had gained nearly 30 yards before giving up his spot in the backfield to Gaines who promptly took the next handoff all the way into the end zone.

The excitement of its first score didn't last long into the second half for Belhaven as Lindsey Wilson scored again on its second drive.

With the Blazers attempting to go for a fourth-down conversion to pick up one yard on the Lindsey Wilson 30-yard line, Blue Raider sophomore Grant Darnell met Gaines in the backfield to give the Blue Raiders the ball on the turnover.

Using the defense's momentum, Lindsey Wilson marched down the field on just seven plays, including a pass from sophomore Greg Young to freshman tight end Ben Madon for 16 yards which set up Barber's six-yard run for another score.

Now up 27-7, the game started to sway in Belhaven's favor as the Blazer surge started with sophomore kicker Mark Corbett missing the extra point after Barber's score.

With three minutes left in the third quarter Belhaven scored again on a five-yard run by Gaines to pull within 27-14. Then early in the fourth quarter a sequence of a fumbled punt return, followed by a fumble by Williams on a quarterback keeper and finally Cresap being sacked just 10-yards from the end zone set up a 32-yard field-goal attempt for Corbett.

Attempting to go up 30-14, the Blue Raider protection broke down and Belhaven blocked the kick and the ball fell just right for Deandre Wood to pick it up and run nearly 80 yards for a touchdown to bring Belhaven within six at 27-21.

The troubles continued for Lindsey Wilson as on the next drive Cresap fumbled the ball on first and 10 to give the ball to the Blazers on the Blue Raiders' 33-yard line.

Without long to go for a score, Belhaven completed a 20-yard pass to Gaines, followed by 15 and two-yard runs by Gaines to score and take a 28-27 lead.

With just under eight minutes left in the game, the next two drives ended on a punt before Lindsey Wilson finally got some momentum, entering Belhaven territory on a keeper by Young.

After Young picked up the first down, the Blue Raiders caught Belhaven off balance with a screen pass to sophomore Dakota Brown away from the rest of the play that he took off with for over 20 yards, but in a back-breaking moment, fumbled the ball and gave Belhaven the drive at its own 20-yard line with two minutes left.

On second and 10, Belhaven caught the Blue Raiders off sides and completed a touchdown pass that seemingly put the game away, but all was lost as the penalty was offsetting as the Blazers were called for their own personal foul near its sideline that gave Lindsey Wilson a second life.

The Blazers picked up just one first down on the drive as sophomore Aaron Anderson made a huge tackle on third and four that forced Belhaven to punt with under 30 seconds to play.

Faced with no timeouts, Cresap played the final moments of the game as perfectly as you could script it.

The drive opened with a 40-yard strike to Barnes to move to the Belhaven 30-yard line, followed by a spike to stop the clock. Cresap then hit freshman Shannon Coofer on a six-yard pass that he took out of bounds, quickly Brown made a 10-yard run down to the 14-yard line where Cresap spike again to leave 10 seconds on the clock.

Faced with the choice of kicking a field goal or running one more play, Lindsey Wilson head coach Chris Oliver sent Cresap out one more time with the play that found Barnes in the corner, making the highlight-reel grab to put away the Blazers.

Lindsey Wilson kicked off with four seconds on the clock and Belhaven attempted a pair of laterals, but the gimmick return failed as Dakota Cogdill tackled Tommie Stewart to bring the game to a close.

The Blue Raiders won the offensive battle, racking up 455 total yards compared to 419 for the Blazers. Lindsey Wilson didn't throw an interception and Belhaven had just one, but the teams did combine for 10 fumbles, losing four each in critical points of the game.

Cresap went 16-of-27 for 287 yards through the air with three touchdowns, while Williams finished 14-of-31 for Belhaven without a touchdown.

Barnes and Brown each caught a game-high five passes for Lindsey Wilson, with Barnes racking up 119 receiving yards and hauling in three touchdown catches.

Anderson led the Blue Raider defense with eight tackles and Griffin Clark and Trey Benson each finished with a sack. -DAN WHITE.
