Robert Flowers: Tears from pride were in our eyes today An Adair County leader relates feelings most of us had on this most unforgettable moment, a new high point in our 209 year history By Robert FLowers It is my prayer that years later patriotic Adair Countians can state where they were when they saw Dakota Meyer receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. I was in the lobby of the Bank of Columbia with my fellow employees as we moaned and groaned about the delay of the ceremony. I was amazed that when the cameras shifted to the East room of the White House there was a hush in the crowd. You could hear a pin drop on the carpet. As the opening prayer began, heads were bowed. Cold chills crossed us as Dakota's father, Michael, and grandparents, Dwight and Jean Meyer, were seated. As the President of the United States began the description of the decoration to follow, we were all touched by the description of the events that led to this designation. How could a young, local boy respond to such need and responsibility in the midst of such a firefight. It makes us so proud. I was amazed at the stature and dignity of Dakota during the presentation from President Obama as well as his demeanor during the presentation by the Officer in Charge for the Medal of Honor. There was such a hush in the crowd as stomachs and throats quivered and tears were in all eyes. It made us proud to have a Columbia/Adair Countian receive such a deserved honor. With no offense, I wish I had been there to share a beer with Dakota Meyer and President Obama. God bless Dakota Meyer, the armed forces, and the United States of America. -ROBERT FLOWERS This story was posted on 2011-09-15 19:13:16
