Barbara Armitage: First you learn to read, then you read to learn

Principal's advice sunk in: After hearing it, writer's grandmother bought her a set of encyclopedias

Barbara Armitage comments on education:

When I was going into the 9th grade my grandmother enrolled me in the local Catholic High school - we were not Catholic but this school was well known as one of the best schools in Florida.

The week before school started the principal spoke to the parents at the open house. I can't remember her name, but I do remember her saying "First your children learn to read then they read to learn". The next day my grandmother bought me a set of encyclopedias.

Anyone who would deny a child a book (in any form) is condemning the child to ignorance. -BARBARA ARMITAGE
