End of course assessments requirement for ACHS students

The Kentucky Department of Education will require high school students in Kentucky to take end-of-year tests in certain courses

By Alan W. Reed
News from Adair County School District

The mandate for high school students to take end of course exams originates from Senate Bill I, designed to further reform education in Kentucky.

Students in Adair County Schools will be taking the end of course exams in Biology, Algebra II, English II, and U.S. History. The state Board of Education recommended that high schools across the state count the scores from the exams as 20 percent of students final grades.

Adair County School Superintendent Darrell Treece said that he agrees with the concept, citing that students will be held more accountable for their performance on the state tests in the spring. Treece says he feels most teachers and administrators are excited about the changes.

The way it has been, there was little incentive for students to try their best on the state exams. Now it will affect their grade in certain subjects, said Treece.

According to Lisa Gross, spokesperson for the Kentucky Department of Education, the end-of-course exams are tied into the ACT exam which students take in early spring of their junior year.

While 20 percent is recommended, it is up to the schools Site Based Council to make the final decision on how much the end-of-course exam is counted. Alan W. Reed
