JIM: A Chi-town to Montpelier record (of a sort) Could anybody top this nomination for the World Record Book of Guinnesses: If memory serves correctly, he walked less than five miles from the first step near Chicago to his grandparents' front door on (modern day) Acree Road. -JIM By "Jim" This surely is a Chicago to Columbia; or, more accurately, a Chi-town to *Montpelier record of some sort. My dear old brother received his discharge from the U.S. Coast Guard in late 1947 or early 1948 and immediately set out for Montpelier, via shank's mare and a hopeful outstretched thumb, wearing his service togs with his carryall slung over his back. Back in those days, not only were folks more trusting, a uniform commanded respect. Brother told he'd walked practically no distance until a trucker stopped and gave him a lift to near Indianapolis. From there, he'd barely got his hitchin' thumb limbered up until another good soul picked him up and took him into Louisville. From River City, he got a series of shorter rides, winding up practically within shouting distance of his destination on the outskirts of Montpelier. If memory serves correctly, he walked less than five miles from the first step near Chicago to his grandparents' front door on (modern day) Acree Road. -"Jim *Montpelier. "Jim" is speaking of the main Montpelier, the capital of the fertile, scenic territory astride the Adair and Russell County line. The Texarkana of Adair/Russell Counties, if you will. Not the other Montpelier, the little shire town of Washington Co., Vermont, which is one of those little states near, but not quite in, Canada. Greater Montpelier, KY, which includes all of Adair, Russell, and parts of Cumberland and Clinton Counties, would total some 45,000 people. Montpelier, up east, has fewer people than Campbellsville, Glasgow, or Somerset, and only approaches the size of Radcliff if one gives them Barre to boot. Vermont is best known for Ben & Jerry, Jim & Sharon (or useta be), and Darrell & His Other Brother Darrell. Montpelier, KY is best known for Joe & Ada Coffey and for its proximity to Esto, Russell Co., KY. -EW This story was posted on 2011-08-09 09:32:30
