Poetry by Billy Joe Fudge: With You

WITH YOU
By Billy Joe Fudge
I am a castle, admire me.
Stare in awe at my majesty.
Each stone and timber I lay in
To make myself strong among men.

I stand tall and do no cower
For above most I do tower.
Constructed solid and so strong;
Within myself I make my home.

From my youth I've been building me
Tall and mighty for all to see.
Ever bigger was my decree-
Stronger and stronger I would be.

From inside me I would expand.
Upon my own strength I did stand!
These were the things I did believe.
This was the way I did perceive

Myself up until the present.
I was continually crescent.
The island that none be, I thought-
I was, but thinking came to naught.

Yes, my scient went overcast
And I suffered a colder blast
Of frigid arctic through my walls
Than I thought possible at all.

Castle stones began to crumble
As termites began to mumble
About chewing up my timbers
And starting to dismember

My supposed self-sufficient home.
Now, isolated and alone,
Thinking of my castle's collapse
And how to build a stronger house;

At long last I began to see-
My castle should be less of me.
Now I'm proud to say that I choose-
To build my home with, with you.
Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry,(270) 250-2239
