Westlake announces reduction in labor force: 30 lose jobs

Rick Brown, interim CEO at Westlake, said the reduction in force is necessary to protect the jobs of the remaining 300 people. Interim CEO says new family and specialty physicans are being recruited, and the success of that effort may mean that some of the affected employees can be called back. A whole new emergency room staff is expected to be in place by August 1, 2011, he said.

Westlake Regional Hospital, Columbia, KY, is reducing its labor force by 30 people effective today, June 30, 2011, the Rick Brown, interim CEO, announced in a hospital press release today.
Update 2011-06-30/3:05pmCT: The reduction in force will save the hospital approximately $700,000 per year, Mr. Brown's secretary said in a followup phone call.
"It is a very sad time when you have to tell someone their job hasbeen eliminated, especially in this economic climate," Rick Brown, interim CEO of the hospital said. "Unfortunately , given the hospital's census and changes in some of its clinics when compared to industry standards we just had too many people on staff to handle the current volume of business."

Affected employees were given up to 12 weeks severance pay depending on the number of years they had worked for the organization, Brown said.

The action was necessary, he said. "Nobody likes to tell someone they no longer have a job.but if we didn't take this action it could put the jobs of the remaining 300+ employees in jeopardy.

If business picks up, some employees may be called back

"Over the next several months we will be implementing a number of initiatives that will drive more business to the hospital and its clinics. when that occurs the opportunity may present itself to bring some of the affected employees back." he said.

Brown gave limited details about the initiatives, but said that the hospital is now actively recruiting primary and specialty physicians. He said, "That will result in expanding present services as well as offering new services to the residents of Columbia, Adair County, and the surrounding counties.

Another detail in the release was that there will be a change in the staffing of the hospital emergency room. By August 1, 2011, he said, "A whole new group of emergencyroom physicians to staff the hospital's er starting on August 1st," Brown said.

Today's cutbacks are one of a number of steps the current management of Westlake is taking, Mr. Brown said, but did not elaborate on the others. "This hospital has been in existence for well over 40 years providing quality healthcare services to the residents of Columbia and surrounding communities. we are going to make sure it continues to be here in the future," He said.
