Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

For a fifth year in a row, Adair County schools not only qualified for the International Championships of Future Problem Solving, but they have walked away with a fifth straight Top 10 finish worldwide.

ACMS team members Sarah McQuaide, Amber Turner, Rebecca Montgomery, Tiara Holmes, and Hannah Burnett finished 8th in the team event this past weekend (June 9-June 12, 2011).

Abby Walker, ACHS Sophomore, finished 2nd overall in the Senior Alternates division for the high school team. As part of alternates competition, Walker was grouped with a student from Nebraska and Wisconsin to complete the FPS booklet.

The ACHS team finished with all but one 1st or 2nd place ranking among judges, but fell just shy of edging into the Top 10 in the high school division. ACHS team members are Emmalee Baker, Roslin Wilson, Alison Feese, and Kyle Castaneda.

Heather Jackson, ACHS Sophomore, competed with students from Singapore and two other U.S. states in the Scenario Writing competition. Together, the group wrote a 19-page scenario in a two-hour allotted time frame, but also fell just shy of the awards stage.

"I'm beyond thrilled to have had the representation and results at Internationals this year. There is a tremendous effort that goes into getting just one team prepared for an event this big, but Adair County had qualified for and was competing in five separate events at this worldwide stage. Thousands of teams wish for the opportunity just to qualify even once for this event, much less walk away with awards. It was another very special weekend for the kids and for Adair County."

In all team divisions, there were well over 50 teams who had qualified to compete at this final stage of year-long competition. The ACMS team was the highest finishing team from Kentucky in their competition. The ACHS squad also surpassed two of their in-state competitors during this year's international competition to further secure a spot among Kentucky's elite powerhouses.

Abby Walker's 2nd Place finish in Alternate Division was Adair's highest finish ever for that particular division. Walker was a State Champion in that competition this year in March.

Future Problem Solving International boasts more than 250,000 competitors worldwide at the beginning stages of competition as it narrows down to a select few who advance to the International Championships. Future Problem Solving Program International involves students from Australia, Canada, China, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, and the United States.
