Colonel William Casey Elementary School held its first ever grade level Spelling Bee, Friday, May 20, 2011. Contenders representing each first grade homeroom eventually squared off for the title. Amber Loy was declared the winner after correctly spelling the word "mint".

Pam Geisselhardt, Primary Talent Pool Coordinator for Adair County Schools, served as the moderator for the event.

According to Wikipedia, the first officially sanctioned spelling bee in the U.S. was won by 11 year old Frank Neuhauser. He reportedly competed against eight other students in the first National Spelling Bee in 1925 in Washington, DC. Alan Reed
