Update on A-Team fundraising for trip to Wisconsin News from Adair Co. High School A-team Adair County's High School and Middle School Academic Teams will be working roadblocks from 9:00-3:00 on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the following locations:
The teams will be competing at the Future Problem Solving International Championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, on June 9-12 and at the Quiz Bowl National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, on Memorial Day Weekend. Adair County has been represented by high school and middle school teams at the world championships the past five consecutive years and each team representing the district over that time span has finished in the Top 5 in the world every single time. Last year's ACMS team finished 3rd overall in the team competition while ACHS competitor Heather Jackson finished 5th in individual competition with Scenario Writing. Rebecca Montgomery was even selected as flag bearer representing Kentucky for the Opening Ceremonies. The ACHS Academic Team was creating the most buzz in the country among public, private, and charter schools alike at the end of last year's season when they muscled through the Quiz Bowl National Championships on their way to a 7th Place finish overall. This was the highest placement a Kentucky team has earned in the history of the event. The small public high school was etched into the Top 10 slot among the nation's "usual suspects" among elite private schools and prep schools, thus creating a firestorm of comments about the team's impressive and surprising run from the coaches and players of the typical national powerhouses. This year, both the Quick Recall/Quiz Bowl team and the Future Problem Solving teams have yet again made their marks historically. The ACHS Academic Team recently took 3rd in the entire nation at the first ever National History Bee in Washington, DC, in April. In addition, ACHS Senior Luke Maupin finished the number 2-seeded player in the individual portion of the competition and advanced to Finals that evening where the top 8 players competed in winner-take-all format at the same time to determine the overall winner. In both the team and individual portion, Adair County High School was the only Kentucky team to advance to finals and set the bar quite high for future Kentucky schools to attempt to follow. The Future Problem Solving teams of both ACMS and ACHS qualified for Internationals with top 5 finishes at the Kentucky State Championship in March. Included with the teams was ACHS Sophomore Heather Jackson, who will compete in June for the second year in a row. This year, 11 ACHS and ACMS students advance to the World Championships, an incredible new record for the school district, and one of the most well-represented contingencies that Kentucky can possibly offer, as the team is represented in seven different competitive areas at the event. Added to all of that, the ACHS Academic Team finished the highest in team history in overall points at the Kentucky State Championship in March. They also qualified for the National Championship in every single tournament they competed in this season. The ACHS Quiz Bowl team took 3rd Place at the State Championships in late April. The team missed playing the State Championship Final match by one question against eventual State Champion Paul Laurence Dunbar. Adair County had two quiz bowl teams eligible for that State Tournament, and the underclassmen "B"-team had their biggest win of the year when they upset Top 15-ranked Campbell County in the morning rounds, thus helping forward the spotlight toward future success at ACHS as well. At the State Championships, Luke Maupin was the highest individual scorer in the state for the second year in a row. The team has worked in various capacities for the school and other organizations once again this year to earn a portion of this year's expenses to compete at these national- and international-level events.
