Bob Barnes truck moved to street near Five Star Barnes says he understands: Local Walmart store officials were simply following rules which prevented his tornado relief effort from being set up on company property. He's moved it to a street near Five Star. Contributions are pouring in. But one donor, who had $2,000 for purchases in the Walmart store, leaves in tears. By Ed Waggener (Monday, May 2, 2011: 06:33:00) - The Bob Barnes tornado relief effort truck has been moved to the drive by Five Star in Holladay Place after Columbia Walmart managers on duty told him of company rules which do not allow private efforts such his to be on company property without prior approval. The on duty manager was apologetic, but said that company rules had to be followed. He expressed support, otherwise, for Bob Barnes' work. Barnes has moved the truck, and said he fully understands. In his rush to help in the emergency in Alabama, he said, he had failed to ask permission. He'll be on his way to Alabama with a backhoe and other equipment at around 8amCT. "I had just thought that, because purchases might be made in the local store," he said, "that it would be okay." However, at least one of the donors, who is making a $2,000 donation to Barnes' relief effort, said she could not understand. Barnes said that he has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. He said that one woman had come by his house a second time yesterday to increase her donation to the cause. Onboard, he has a backhoe and other equipment he uses in his plumbing business, along with a sleeping bag, tent, and survival gear. He has no animosity about the need to move. "They're just following company rules. I made a mistake in not asking, but there was so much going on getting ready, and the way I figure it, the sooner I get to Alabama to help, the better."He said that his choice of location was made on the premise that the location near the store and near the parkway interchange would be best for those wishing to help. "Still," he said, "it would probably have been better to have set up Downtown. I just didn't think of this possibility." This story was posted on 2011-05-02 06:33:22
