WKU changes summer operating hours to save energy

News from Western Kentucky University

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Western Kentucky University officials announced Monday, April 18, 2011, that the University will operate on an alternative schedule for the summer. Beginning May 16 through August 12, 2011, WKU's business operating hours will be from 7:30am to 3pmCT, Monday through Friday. Classes will still be held throughout the day and during evening hours.

WKU has traditionally operated on a modified workday during the summer; however, this year officials decided to further adjust the operating schedule to maximize energy savings during the peak electricity usage period of the day.

A new Bowling Green Municipal Utilities/TVA electricity rate structure will become effective May 1 that will result in substantially higher utility rates for the University during the high demand hours from 1pm. to 7pmCT, according to John Osborne, vice president for Campus Services and Facilities. "Significantly reducing electricity usage for the campus during these peak hours is a strategic initiative designed to both manage our utility costs and reduce WKU's impact on the environment," Osborne said.At 3pmCT each day, air conditioning will be reduced in most facilities on campus causing building and room temperatures to increase. Afternoon and evening classes will be moved into fewer buildings that are deemed to be more energy efficient, and those buildings will continue to be cooled during class times. Considerations will also be made for research projects, summer camps and special events. Individuals seeking to do business with the University outside of the new summer operating hours should contact the appropriate business office to make alternative arrangements. For contact information call the University operator at (270) 745-0111.The University will resume regular operating hours of 8amto 4:30pmCT on August 15, 2011.
