Mid-South Conference announces Softball Players of the Week

Alex Jane Clemmons of CU is Player of the Week; Shawnee State University sophomore Ali Thompson is Pitcher of the Week, an honor dominated by three time MSC Pitcher of the Week Anyibell Ramirez of Lindsey Wilson College

LOUISVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University senior Alex Jane Clemmons is the Mid-South Conference Softball Player of the Week and Shawnee State University sophomore Ali Thompson is the MSC Pitcher of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.



The conferences weekly award is the first of the season for both Clemmons and Thomson.

Clemmons recorded a .500 (12-for-24) batting average with four home runs to earn MSC Player of the Week. The Smiths Grove, Ky., outfielder also scored 10 runs and amassed 10 runs batted in while helping the Tigers to a 5-1 week.

Clemmons hit safely in all six games last week. She concluded the week with three home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Georgetown College on Sunday.

This season, Clemmons leads the MSC in home runs (12) and runs (41) and is third in the conference with 52 hits. She is sixth in the MSC in RBIs (33) and seventh in slugging percentage (.586).

Campbellsville improves to 28-21 overall and 18-6 in conference play.

Thompson won three times while posting a 1.33 earned run average to earn MSC Pitcher of the Week.

The Franklin Furnace, OH, native, produced a career-high 14 strikeouts in the Bears 2-0 win over West Virginia University Tech to opened the week. She added 11 strikeouts in a 7-3 win over Tech and four Ks in a 4-3 complete-game win over Urbana (OH) University. It was her third complete game of the week.

Thompson concluded the week with 29 strikeouts and just one walk in 21 innings of work.

This season, Thompson is 12-5 with a 3.32 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 107-2/3 innings of work Her 12 wins rank fourth most in the MSC.

Shawnee State is 18-14 overall and leads the MSC East Division with an 11-7 record.

The next softball weekly awards are scheduled to be announced on Monday, April 25, 2011. -Chris Wells
