Victoria Pike offers ways to thwart telephone scammers

By Victoria Pike

Do not answer calls that have a number such as 502-000-????.

These callers claim to offer a lower rate on your credit card but don't specify what card.

This is a way of seeing if this is a real phone number they are calling.

Once they get your number, they sell it to other scammers and the cycle begins. I spoke with the Kentucky Attorney Generals office today about this.

They informed me calls with 000 in them are coming from disposable phones that can't be traced.

If you answer one of these calls, DO NOT try to call them back, some are very rude and this just confirms they have your number.

Having your number on the no call list doesn't matter to them since they know the calls can't be traced back to them.

They suggested that if you have caller ID, just don't answer any calls with the first numbers being 000's.

Hopefully, they will finally give up calling. Remember, they are trying to randomly find real phone numbers to sell. -Victoria Pike
