Mr. Treece to propose longer school days starting Mar. 16, 2011

Half hour per day for 12 days will make up for one full day of school missed

By Alan Reed
News from the Adair County School District

Superintendent Darrell Treece will propose extending the school day by thirty minutesbeginning Wednesday, March 16, 2011. Treece will make the proposal at the next board ofeducation meeting on Tuesday evening March 15, 2011.

"The legislature is allowing Kentucky's schools some flexibility in making up time missed thisyear due to bad weather," said Treece. Adair County Schools were forced to close for 14days due to snow.

By adding thirty minutes to the end of the school day for twelve days beginning March 16,2011, Adair County Schools can make up one full day of missed instruction. Assuming no moreschool is missed, the last day for students would be Friday, May 27, 2011 instead of Tuesday ofthe next week. The closing day for teachers would be May 31, 2011 instead of June 1.

Although the school board must first approve the amendment to the school calendar, thesuperintendent says that he wants to give parents and teachers ample time to plan for a slightlylonger school day.

By lengthening the school day beginning Wednesday, March 16, 2011 students would complete the12 longer days prior to spring break.
