He was a native of Casey Co., KY and was a former resident of Columbia, KY, where he is remembered as the owner of the Western Auto Store and was employed at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, and the Adair Ambulance Service for a time. At the time of his death he was living in Florida. He leaves many family members and descendants in Adair Co., KY

Maurice Eugene Lay, formerly of Adair Co., KY (1928-2011)

He was born on July 1, 1928 at Gilpin, KY in Casey Co., KY. He was the son of the late Edgar and Zona Martin Lay. He died Sunday, February 27, 2011, in St. Cloud, FL, at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 26 days.He is survived by his wife Christine Vest Lay of Saint Cloud, FL, and the following:
  • Two daughters: Linda Mallory and husband Richard of Columbia, KY, and Shirley Hancock of St. Cloud, FL

  • Two sons: Eugene Lay and wife Angel of St. Cloud, FLand James Lay of St. Cloud, FL

  • One sister: Waunetta Slaughter of Orlando, FL

  • Two brothers: Garnett Lay and wife Doris of Liberty, KY andIrvin Lay and wife Faye of Fort Myers, FL

  • Eight grandchildren: survived locally by Ann Marie Austin, Ashley Merritt Mefford, Kristen Merritt and Danielle Mallory

  • And 13 great grandchildren
Mr. Lay was retired from the Railroad. He owned and operator the Western Auto Store in Columbia, had worked at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, the Adair County Ambulance Service and was a carpenter for the OsceolaCounty School System in FL.
