Remembering Hughes Walker: Saddened also Death of a childhood friend evokes a tribute and brings back memories of their families' childhoods on Burkesville ST, of Edith Walker's kindergarten school and staying with Billy and Sylvia Wilson afterwards, of the families' changes of residences, of the writer's first kindergarten teacher also being one of her first teachers at Lindsey Wilson College. She remembers Hughes - older than she - as an intelligent, kind, caring, well-mannered youngster who would reach adulthood and be so well prepared for his ultimate role helping veterans with their VA credentials About:Russell Hughes Walker, Adair Co., KY (1946-2011) By Prudence Hutchison Westholm I also was saddened to hear of Hughes Walker's passing. I knew his family very well when we were neighbors on Burkesville St. in the 1950's. We lived in the rock house across from Dreamland Motel and Hughes, John, and Vicky lived, of course, with their parents, R. R. "Pete" and Edith (Cundiff) Walker and grandmother, Mrs. Victoria Cundiff (Mrs. Vick) two houses up. I have many happy memories of the times the Walker kids and I played in the yard of their house. Also, one time we all went on a fun-filled picnic to Pete's farm out on the Campbellsville RD. and I rode a horse for the first time. I remember Hughes, John and Vicky as being friendly and well-mannered children who were a lot of fun to be around. Hughes was the oldest and was so kind to his siblings and also to me. I attended the private kindergarten that Mrs. Edith Walker taught in the 1954-55 school year in a separate building which was behind their house. My mother, Anna Hutchison, made arrangements for me to go up to the Walkers' house in the mornings when she left for her job as a teacher at Columbia Grade Center. I was in their home before our kindergarten class started and enjoyed being with the family so much. When the half-day morning kindergarten class was over, John, Vicky and I (Hughes was in grade school) would get in Pete's big Buick (I think, not sure of the auto make) with Mrs. Walker to make the trip to Billy and Sylvia Wilson's home down from the Columbia Grade Center. I ate lunch with Linda and Mrs. Wilson and stayed there until my mother picked me up when her school was over. When I started Lindsey Wilson College in the fall of 1967, Mrs. Walker had by this time completed her graduate degrees and was my English 101 teacher at LWC. What a great teacher she was! We often recalled that she started me in primary school and then again when I entered college. So I am writing this today to extend my sincere sympathy to Hughes' family. Hughes Walker was a very intelligent, caring and genuine person. I can truly see him helping others with their VA credentials/claims at the VA Medical Center in NC for he enjoyed being with people and inherited the "gift of gab" and being able to "spin a yarn" from his father, Pete. Pete, Edith, Hughes, John, Vicky and Mrs. Vick always have had a special place in my heart for all are and were very fine folks and I know I was a better person for having known this very fine family. We moved to Wall St. in Nov. 1957 and then later the Walkers moved from Burkesville St. to Reed St. Stewart was born after they moved to Reed St. for I remember stopping by to see the new baby after he was born and visiting with my very first teacher, Mrs. Edith Walker. -Prudence Hutchison Westholm Elizabethtown, KY This story was posted on 2011-02-19 16:46:44
