Barred owls heard at 6:02amCT, Feb. 19, 2011, above Bull Run

Second day of Great Backyard Birdcount is underway:With help of internet, it's getting easier to identify birds by their calls: Barred Owls at All about birds
By Barbara Armitage
Adair Co. Garden Club. (270) 250-2730

Officially the first bird of the day today at Tucker's Station goes to Wayne, again. At 6:02amCT he was treated to an early morning conversation between the two Barred Owls that moved in to the trees at the edge of our property last year.

With the help of the internet it is getting easier to identify the birds by their calls. Birds like Owls can be hard to spot but if you can identify them by their call you can Count them.

To listen to each bird's call follow the link on Columbia Magazine to fill out your data sheet on line. Complete the general information section first then when you enter your actual Count click on the bird name. This will take you to more information on this species including recordings of the bird's call.

Birds of Kentucky: Barred Owl in The Holler

2011-02-19 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings RD, Ozark, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
Not everyone is lucky enough to see a Barred Owl, like this beautiful bird which came to The Holler and was lucky enough to have this handsome portrait made, but Wayne and Barbara Armitage have a pair which have just taken up residence at The Farm at Tucker's Station, Bull Run RD, Columbia, KY. The owls were heard this morning and identified even before Wayne spotted them. The call is easily learned. It sounds like "Who cooks for you?" Bird voices are more easy to identify these days. iBird, a program Barbara Armitage has for her iPad, is one good one; she also recommends the website, All About Birds. Shamarie Claiborne photographed the barred owl above, in the latter part of March, 2009. It's part of the CMs Birds of Kentucky archives.
