Dr. Betty Sue Griffin will be the guest speaker at MLK Jr. Day By Cindy ClouseNews from Somerset Community College Dr. Betty Sue Griffin will be the guest speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration on Sunday, January 16, 2pmET/1pmCT, at First Baptist Church, 128 North Main ST, Somerset, KY (MAP) and the Celebration will be held in the fbc2 Sanctuary. The Celebration is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. The event is sponsored by Somerset Community College. Described as a distinguished entrepreneur, accomplished scholar and researcher, Griffin has addressed audiences at regional and national conferences, religious events, banquets, corporate and university events. She combines hard facts with a rich blend of humor to create a powerful message. Her presentations, drawn from her eminent careers as educator, consultant, corporate and community leader, combined with a lively energetic delivery, serve as a road map to help others recreate their own soaring success. She serves as CEO of The Griffin Group, a national professional education and corporate coaching agency. Clients range from universities to school districts and from private to public sector foundations and corporations. A graduate of Bate School, Danville, KY, she completed undergraduate study at Fisk University in Nashville, TN. She holds earned Masters of Education and Doctorate of Education degrees from Oregon State University. Post graduate work was completed at Wharton, Harvard, Stanford, Howard, and the University of Texas at Austin. No stranger to higher education, she served as Professor and Chairperson of The Division of Education and Human Services at Kentucky State University; Tenured Professor of Education at Oregon State University; Visiting scholar-Stanford University; and Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor of Minority Affairs at the University of Kentucky. As a public school teacher, she taught elementary students at Camp LeJeune, NC; secondary students in Philadelphia, PA; and served as Desegregation Specialist for the Portland, OR School District. Honored as a Kentucky Colonel by five governors; awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by the Governor of Indiana; selected by the Louisville chapter as The 1999 National Council of Negro Women-Educator of The Year; selected in 1993 as Lexingtons Community Achiever of The Year by the YMCA Black Achievers organization; and recognized in 2007 as the first African American graduate from Bate School as Alum of The Year, by the Danville School System. Honored to have been selected as delegate to the National NAACP Convention Miami, Florida by the Louisville chapter, she has served as banquet speaker for NAACP chapters located in Covington, Paducah, Owensboro, Morganfield and Bowling Green KY.; Gary, Hammond, Muncie and Marion IN; Sandusky, OH; and Tampa, FL. She serves as board member and former Chairperson of the Kentucky Governors Long Term Policy Research Board; board member-The Lexington Urban League; board member-Health Kentucky; and was reappointed by The U.S. Office of Civil Rights to Kentuckys Civil Rights Advisory Commission.
