Local artist paints portraits of people, animals, and the town

By George Kolbenschlag

If you've seen the new Homeplace on Green River signs on KY 55 between Columbia and Campbellsville or the huge 16' x 32' mural on the wall of the Taylor County Courthouse in Campbellsville, you have sampled the talent of local artist Joshua Mason.

Mason, who lives in Elkhorn on the Adair/Taylor county line, came to south central Kentucky from California three years ago. He's working to become a regional artist.

Mason, who says he has "always drawn and painted," works in a variety of mediums including oil, clay, wax, charcoal and chalk, water color and acrylics. While in California, Mason had his own sculpting company, designing and sculpting toy prototypes for major toy companies including Disney, Mattel, and MGA. He has also worked in marketing, graphic design and publication design.

He is presently concentrating on murals, landscapes and portraits of both people and pets. In addition to his work for Homeplace and Taylor County, he has done several portraits of local folks and their animals.

He works from his home, a small farm in Elkhorn, where he and his wife have converted a former church into a very comfortable country home where they keep a vegetable garden and tend donkeys, chickens and ducks.

A Gulf-war veteran, Mason used the GI bill to complete his associate's degree in fine arts at El Camino Community College. He comes from an artistic family. His father owns Mason Design, a graphic design company in Simi Valley, CA.

He says he's not an artist who makes deep philosophical statements about or with his art. "I feel that is subjective and it is up to the viewer to determine its deeper meanings. I just make it. How it's interpreted is up to the viewer," says Mason.
Mason specializes in custom portraits of pets and people. He can be contacted at his home at (270) 465-0171 or by e-mail at: joshuamasonart@yahoo.com.
