SCC gets $1.1 million grant to help low income students Click on headline for full story, photo(s) By Cindy Clouse News from Somerset Community College Somerset Community College has been awarded a five-year federal grant of $1.1 million to increase services for Somerset Campus students who are low-income, disabled or first in their family to attend college. The Student Support Services (SSS) grant, which is from the U.S. Department of Education, will be awarded annually in the amount of $220,000 for five years. The overall purpose of the grant is to increase the rates at which eligible students maintain good academic standing and are retained, graduate, and transfer to four-year institutions to pursue baccalaureate degrees. The program offers academic advising, free tutoring, financial aid advisement and assistance with transferring to four-year colleges and universities. In addition, students will be provided personal and career counseling, academic performance monitoring and will participate in a peer-mentoring program, college/career workshops, and cultural and social events. New students accepted in the program before the fall 2011 semester will have the opportunity to participate in the summer bridge program called Emerging Scholars Program. This will be an intensive experience to become "college ready" in reading, writing or study skills before the semester begins. All services are free. The Student Support Services grant will assist 140 students on the Somerset Campus. Preference is given to students whose parents did not graduate from a four-year college or university, students from low income families or students with a handicap or disability. Also, there must be a need for academic support as shown by one or more low scores on the COMPASS or a similar test, having a deficiency in a high school subject such as English, math or science, or by having been out of school for several years and help is needed getting back in the swing of being a student. To be eligible for the program, students do not have to live in Pulaski County. They can live in any county that SCC serves, but must take some classes on the Somerset Campus. For more information about the Student Support Services grant or to apply to the program, contact SSS Director, Dorothy Phillips, at 606-451-6816 or dorothy.phillips@kctcs.edu.
