Varmintology Bulletin: Doodlebug holes at Creelsboro, KY About: The Rockhouse and Doodlebug Holes By Ed Waggener Shellie Elmore sent two wonderful photos from Creelsboro, KY's Rockhouse Bottom today. One photo shows Doodlebug holes. The picture begs for input from those better versed in Doodlebugs, possibly an old-school varmintologist trained by the late Dr. Billy K. Neat. His associate, his Watson to Sherlock Holmes, Pete Walker, once commented upon the sociological aspects of Doodlebugs. Walker asserted that character of little boys could be prophesied by the methods they used to call Doodlebugs out of their holes. This is paraphrased, but essentially what he said was that kids who called down the hole warning the Doodlebug that its house was on fire to scare it out of its hole grew up to be pool sharks, frauds, bank robbers, (he said bankers, and lawyers, but we won't repeat that), scalawags, scoundrels, pinhookers, pirates, or worse, he said, bores and Republicans; Whereas, he said, those kids who coaxed the Doodlebug out of its hole with a straw grew up to be Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, ministers of the Gospel, civic leaders, school teachers and Democrats. Pete Walker was, of course, was a known Democrat, as was and is his colleague Grover Cleveland Gilpin, It's a pity, that little boys no longer seem to have the scientific curiosity to delve into the ways of Doodlebugs; that's why we're calling on the oldtimers, Kentucky Colorists, and/or certified Varmintologists to share their Doodlebug wisdom on CM, or at least bring it on down and talk of Doodlebugs with folks at Downtown Days this weekend. -Ed Waggener
