Preservation is for future generations

About: Letter: Not willing to foot bill for preservation

By Billy Joe Fudge

I, like many of your readers, am concerned about the enormous federal debt that is hanging over our heads and the threat that debt carries for posterity. The borrowing of money to fund projects that primarily benefit the present with blatant intent of passing the payment for these projects on to a future generation is a low blow of the highest degree.

This is kind of like buying a new car and making arrangements for your child to pay for it sometime in the future.

However, that is not what we are speaking about with the restoration of our Adair County Courthouse. This restoration project will not only enhance the present downtown situation, but will pass on to future generations a positive piece of history and a continual, cultural and commercial anchor for their community.

This is kind of like paying to have your kid's cavities filled so they can eat better now and avoid the need for dentures when they are older. -Billy Joe Fudge
