News from the Adair County Garden Club

There is that Fall nip in the air today which reminds me that we are quickly coming up on "Bird Feeding Season" and the Adair County Garden Club is gearing up to help you attract beautiful birds to your yard.

When you visit the Adair County Garden Club booth on Burkesville Street during Downtown Days in Columbia, KY, on Saturday October 9, 2010, you are invited to stock up on our Gourmet Suet Balls to take with you; or for your convenience, you may order the suet balls by calling Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979 or Maury Lewis at (270) 384-8890.

To attract a greater variety of birds to your area set up several feeding stations including a hopper-type feeder, a tray-type feeder and a sock or hanging type feeder and of course when the temperature begins to drop provide your birds with ACGC Gourmet Suet Balls to help provide the much needed fat and nutrition that birds need to survive the cold winter months.

Columbia, KY placed 2nd in North America for the most bird counts in the 2010 Great Back Yard Bird Count.

Next year we plan to learn more about our local birds and have even more fun counting them.

Stay tuned for more information on the GBBC coming in February 2011 and how the Adair County Garden Club is going to help you learn more about our feathered neighbors. From the Farm, Tucker's Station, Barbara Armitage.

Birds of Kentucky: Downy Woodpecker eating ACGC suet

2010-09-29 - Photo by Barbara Armitage. 1535 Bull Run RD, Columbia, KY
"Downy Woodpeckers prefer Adair County Garden Club Gourmet Suet Balls over store-bought suet," Barbara Armitage, President of the Adair County Garden Club writes. "This Downey Woodpecker participated in a winter feeding study conducted last winter at Tuckers Station on Bull Run Road. When offered a choice between store-bought suet cakes and our own ACGC Gourmet Suet Balls birds chose the ACGC Suet Balls overwhelmingly. Birds instinctively know whats good for them." ACGC Gourmet Suet Balls will be available at the Garden Club's booth at Downtown Days in Columbia, KY, October 9, 2010.
