Epicurean Kentuckian: B.J. Fudge recalls Dairy Queen hot dog "Folks would come to the window to order with their mind made up and a smile on their face." -BJF About: Epicurean Kentuckian: Hot Dogs By Billy Joe Fudge This photo evoked memories of that simple, less complicated life that we so often lament having lost. In the world in which we find ourselves today there is a lack of appreciation for the simplicity and straightforwardness of the flavor of one. The hot dog is but one really great example of a society that is consumed with the idea that more is better. I submit that since childhood most Americans would not even recognize the taste of this American iconic food and flavor minus the mounds of condiments that suffocate its simple appeal. I fondly remember working at the Dairy Queen during the middle 60's. We offered a hot dog plain and with mustard, ketchup, chili or any combination of the latter three. Folks would come to the window to order with their mind made up and a smile on their face. They had an appreciation for a plain hot dog, plain potato chips, vanilla ice cream, their fellow man, a sunny day, raindrops on the window, and all the "God forbid" simple things of life. Thanks for the reminder of one of the wonderful traditions in Adair County. The Dairy Queen is one of the places in Columbia which stays much the same. It's still at 114 Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY, though today it's called the Dairy Dip. It still evokes memories of over 50 years ago, when Ike was president, the Baptist Church chimes were already a tradition, and I believe, John Alford was coroner and all was well with the world. -EW This story was posted on 2010-09-09 08:20:22
