Banana tree is source particular pride on Bull Run Wayne Armitage's Musa Basjoo can grow as much as two feet in a week in the hottest weather. It can fruit, but the fruit is not edible Click on headline for story plus photo(s) By Barbara Armitage Maybe everything just looks bigger up here on the hill at Tucker's Station but Wayne is particularly proud of our Banana Trees. I enjoyed seeing the photo of Bea Beard's Banana tree a few days ago - I pass by her home on Lowes Lane frequently and never knew that she grew Banana Trees too. There are always lots of surprises in a gardener's backyard. Hopefully more gardeners will send photos of what's growing in their backyards. The hardy Banana tree in both photos is a Musa Basjoo. The Musa Basjoo (Banana) is the hardiest of all the bananas being cold hardy to -20 degrees when mulched properly. It is such a fast grower that sometimes I think I can actually see it grow. During the summer months it can grow 2 feet or more in a week. While it can fruit given the right temperatures, the fruit is not edible. -Barbara Armitage, President, Adair County Garden Club This story was posted on 2010-09-05 06:35:24
