SCC Russell, Clinton Centers host Upward Bound Summer Focus Theme is "Keep It Green, Go Green," Click on headline for story plus photos of kids from Russell, Clinton, Wayne and Casey Counties By Cindy Clouse News from Somerset Community College For the third consecutive year, a select number of Clinton County, Wayne County, Russell County, Casey County and Monticello High School students participated in "Summer Focus." These students spent three weeks at the SCC Russell Center, 848 W Steve Wariner Dr, Russell Springs, KY and three weeks at the SCC Clinton Center, 1001 West Highway 90. Albany, KY. Set to a theme of "Keep It Green, Go Green" Summer Focus students have incorporated a recycling component. Instructors also added ecology related material to the summer curriculum. In addition to language arts, laboratory science, mathematics and foreign language, students have had the opportunity to take workshops in photography, oil painting, videography, computer applications, drama, recreation, and yearbook. Students also traveled to the University of Kentucky and Tennessee Tech to tour campuses and learn about admission requirements and scholarship opportunities. The Upward Bound Program serves high school students who are enrolled in grades 9-12 and meet federal guidelines. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Upward Bound provides assistance to participants as they prepare for college. The program provides academic support in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature and foreign languages. In addition, the program provides services in career exploration, tutoring, counseling and cultural enrichment. The students in Upward Bound are selected through an application and interview process.
