Obituary: Mary Evelyn Walker, 88, Adair Co., KY

Mrs. Walker was a beloved member of the Columbia Community. She was the head of a large, distinguished Adair County family. She was a faithful member of the Columbia Christian Church and was active in civic and political circles. Her teaching career in Adair County schools spanned 31 years.

Mary Evelyn Walker, 88, Columbia, KY, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at 12:38amCT at Commonwealth Specialty Hospital in Bowling Green, KY.

The funeral service will be Friday, June 4, 2010, at 1pmCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Terry White and Bro. Raymond Martin officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery, 315 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 4pmCT, Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the funeral home.



Mary Evelyn Barnes Walker, Columbia, KY (1921)



Mary Evelyn Barnes Walker was a daughter of the late Joseph Menden and Avis Tupman Barnes. She was born Friday, December 2, 1921, and died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at the age of 88 years, and 6 months.

She was a member of Columbia Christian Church, where she was active in the Go Ye Missionary Society and the Ladies Circle group.

She was a longtime member of the Westlake Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

She was a retired educator in the Adair County School system, whose teaching career spanned 31 years.She was member of the Columbia Woman's Club, and played an active role in its affairs. She was a member of the Bliss Homemakers and of the Adair County Democratic Women's Club.

She is survived by the following:
  • Two sons: Richard Lee and his wife Marsha Walker, and Billy Walker, all of Columbia, KY

  • One daughter: Marilyn and her husband Harry Craycroft, Brandenburg, KY

  • One brother: Charles Barnes, Columbia, KY

  • One sister: Martha Burris Martin, Columbia, KY

  • Six grandchildren

  • Eleven great grandchildren
Memorials are suggested to the Walker-Brock Scholarship fund at Lindsey Wilson College. These may be left at the funeral home.

Grissom-Martin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
