The time Jay Wheeler hauled donkeys
through Fairplay in back seat of his car

Memory inspired on viewing: Scenic Adair Co KY Mowing hay with mules Gradyville KY

By Dave Rosenbaum

Mules always remind me of an event when I was a boy at Fairplay. In the summer the loafers would sit under the shade tree across the road from the store in my Dad and Mom's yard, whittling and telling stories.

One Saturday afternoon Jay Wheeler had traded for a couple of donkeys and had taken the back seat out of his car and loaded the donkeys to take them to Harvey's Ridge.

On his way from Columbia he had passed one of our local citizens who was walking and who had visited with either Dr. Gypsie Burton or Dr. Sam Smith, or both, that day He walked up and sat down in the yard, obviously troubled.

After a while he timidly asked if, "any of you gentlemen saw a man driving up the road with a couple of mules in his car"? Apparently he was concerned that perhaps he was seeing things that really weren't there. -Dave Rosenbaum
