Columbia Tourism receives grant for mural

From our Southern and Eastern Kentucky dispatch

Columbia Tourism was awarded $1,600 for the Public Wall Art project. Vonnie Kolbenschlag with Adair County Tourism applied for the funding through the "Let's Paint the Town" program. According to Sue Stivers, of the local tourism commission, the money will be used for a mural depicting local history on the retaining wall in front of the Columbia Cemetery.

The award was presented at the Tour Southern and Eastern Kentucky annual National Tourism Week event May 11, 2010 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, Kentucky.

More than 200 guests were on hand at the Tour Southern and Eastern Kentucky meeting. Communities throughout organization's 47 county service area were eligible to apply for the funding.

Organization goes green; opts not to print programs

During this event, the organization took the first steps toward becoming a "green" organization. Tour launched its paperless registration process and opted not to print programs or agendas for the event. "Going green isn't about the economic impact, it's about lessening our impact on the environment," said Jeff Crowe,Tour Southern and Eastern Kentucky President.

Goal is to be paper free organization

"This is just the first step in our efforts to go green; my goal is to make Tour Southern and Eastern Kentucky a paper free organization in the near future.
