Flooding May 2, 2010:
CJE/CMD Response Command Post at 911 Center

Judge Melton at Command Post at Adair 911 coordinating flood response with County EMD Greg Thomas. "Damage is severe and it is county wide," she said.

By Ed Waggener

Adair County Government units are activated, with a Command Post set up at the Adair 911 Center, 107 N. High Street. County Judge Executive Ann Melton and County Emergency Management Director (EMD) Greg Thomas are in charge of the response, and the entire Adair County Road Department has been Called in to make emergency repairs where possible.

Judge Melton and Director Thomas are helping with calls to the non-emergency line at (270) 384-6466.

"Damage is severe and it is countywide," Judge Melton said. "For now, we're asking everyone to stay off the roads if at all possible and to use extreme care if they do travel."

County Judge Ann Melton reports the closure of the bridge on Abrell Road over Sulphur Creek. Debris is threatening the structure she said, and the county road department is posting temporary signs and barriers closing the road. Fortunately, the bridge is already scheduled for replacement, Judge Melton said.

Several roads are closed (others may be closed)

The list of county roads closed is growing:
  • Old Gradyville RD, with water over the road and a bridge out
  • Corbin Richards RD, with logs across the dry bridges
  • Yuma-Roley RD, in District 6
  • Mt. Tussle RD, of KY 76 near Knifley, KY
  • Abrell Rd at Sulphur Creek, where the county has declared the bridge crossing unsafe.
  • Ray Williams RD in District 6, off KY 76
  • Taylor Ford RD is closed. Water is over the Sulphur Creek Bridge
Command center has had steady stream of calls today

The emergency center has been busy with calls. "We learning of new problems continuously," she said. "Just a little while ago," she said at just after 2pmCT, we had a call that the blacktop on Barnetts Creek Road - the new blacktop we just put down - has washed away. That call came from Lisa Lee."

At this time, Judge Melton said, there is no way to put an estimate on what the damage will be. "We know of $100's of thousands of dollars in damage," she said, "and it's possible the damage will run into the millions."

Temporary shelter at Adair Annex

Judge Melton said the temporary shelter will be available until further notice in the basement of the Adair Annex Building, 424 Public Square, Columbia. "Greg (Adair County Emergency Management Coordinator Greg Thomas) opened the shelter this morning during the tornado alert," she said, "and we'll continue to make that available."

Flooding May 2, 2010: Cut off both ways

2010-05-02 - Photo by Sharon Grant. Bull Run Lane, Columbia, KY
"We were stranded both ways today on Bull Run Lane!" Sharon Grant writes. Bull Run Lane is a beautiful stretch from Bull Run Road to Vester. The road and the creek make an extremely steep drop from the Vester area down to Bull Run Creek's confluence with Russell Creek, and that, according to long time Bull Run Creek student Joe Lynn Barbee, is what makes the creek so pretty and so powerful at times.
