Census Bureau will begin door to door operations, May 1, 2010 By Dale Turner, U.S. Census Partnership Specialist Beginning May 1, 2010, Census takers will be going door to door to those households that have not mailed back a census form. This operation will continue through June, and your household may receive a visit at any time during this time period. Census workers will be wearing an identification badge. They will not ask to come into your house, and they will not ask any questions about finances, bank accounts, etc. The Census worker who collects your information is sworn for life to protect your data, and is subject to fines and/or imprisonment for unlawful disclosure of your information. If no one answers at a particular residence, a census taker will visit again up to three times, and will also attempt to reach the household by phone. A "notice of visit" form will be left that includes a phone number for the resident to schedule an appointment. The Census worker who comes to your door is a person from your community who has been hired to do this important job. Census information is used to distribute over 400 billion dollars in Federal funds which go to our schools, health care agencies, emergency services, roads, etc. Census numbers are also used to allocate seats in the United States Congress and our state and local districts. We ask that you cooperate with this worker so that your community can receive its fair share of funds and accurate political representation. This story was posted on 2010-04-29 13:22:55
