Rotarians raise more than $7,000 for scholarships

Proceeds from Spring 2010 Radio auction go to scholarships to Lindsey Wilson College for Adair County High School Seniors, Adair County GED graduate

Thanks to over 90 persons who supported the Rotary Radio Auction with donations, and hundreds of bidders, over $7,000 was raised Monday and Tuesday evenings April 26 and 27, 2010.

The money will support scholarships to Lindsey Wilson College for Adair County High School seniors. At least one other person who has completed his or her GED test will also receive tuition assistance to attend Lindsey.



Two persons were able to purchase tuition certificates at greatly reduced prices for application to fall classes at the college.

UK/UL game was sold

Other popular items auctioned included two tickets to next fall's University of Kentucky/University of Louisville basketball game in Louisville's new KFC/Yum arena; membership at Lindsey Wilson's new Bob and Doris Holloway Health and Fitness Center and pontoon boats at both Holmes Bend on Green River Lake and Jamestown Marina on Lake Cumberland. Bidders were also able to purchase a night's lodging at any one of Kentucky's 17 state resort parks and items from 70 or more area businesses and services.

Life-sized cutout of Ashley Judd drew interest

Another item that drew a lot of interest was a life-sized cutout photo of Ashley Judd that was contributed by County Court Clerk Dennis Loy.Participation included local restaurants, stores and medical services. Tickets to three area stage productions at Kentucky Repertory Theater in Horse Cave, KY; Barn Lot Theater in Edmonton, KY; and Center Stage at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset, KY, were also auctioned as were season tickets to Lindsey Wilson sporting events.

In addition to Rotarians, others pitched in to help

In addition to the current Rotarians, several others pitched in to help with the auction. WHVE and WAIN donated the air time for both evenings, and WAIN set up the broadcast equipment for us that allowed a simulcast with WHVE The Adair Progress, Community Voice and Columbia Magazine also gave Rotary significant reductions in the cost of advertising the event. The Greensburg Record Herald ran Rotary's add at no cost and a number of persons and establishments made cash donations to the auction.

Rotary alumni Doug McCammish, John Arnold help

Rotary alumni Doug McCammish and John Arnold joined current Rotarians to help both evenings and Adair County Middle School students Kate Durham and Brea Blair spent their Tuesday evening answering phones at the auction.

An invitation to visit meetings, joinRotary International includes 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries. Its 1.2 million members volunteer their time, talent and dollars to serve their communities world-wide. Established in 1935, the Columbia/Adair Club is one of the oldest in the state. It meets every Monday evening at the Lindsey Wilson Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Columbia, KY, at 6pmCT. The Radio Auction is just one of many annual service projects sponsored by the local club. Guests are always welcome.

Spring 2010 Rotary Radio Auction a great success

Proceeds go for ACHS student scholarships to Lindsey Wilson College: Rotarians Dr. Max Downey, left, and Kaye Bowman in the background were joined by Adair County Middle School eighth graders Kate Durham, center and and Brea Blair, right in answering the many incoming calls during Tuesday evening's Rotary Radio Auction. The students volunteered their time and spent the entire three hour auction time answering incoming calls. The auction was a great success, thanks to the many area merchants, businessmen, organizations and community leaders who contributed items. Over $7,000 was raised. All of the profits from the auctionwill go to Adair County High School seniors for scholarships to Lindsey Wilson College.
