A.L. Sinclair wins Earth Day Award

Adair County's Solid Waste Coordinator is one of only 10, statewide, to win the prestigious award

By Cindy Lackey

COLUMBIA, KY - A.L. Sinclair, who is the Adair County Solid Waste Coordinator and PRIDE Treasurer, won the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission's 2010 Earth Day Award. He was one of 10 award recipients honored for their significant contributions to the environment.

The Environmental Quality Commission, which is a citizen advisory board, said that Sinclair: "works tirelessly to improve his community's environment. In addition to starting a recycling program, Sinclair has spearheaded a roadside cleanup program and an effort to remove decades of accumulated trash in sinkholes throughout the county. His latest effort will improve the quality of groundwater in Adair County."

He is a blessing to Adair Co.; work impacts entire region

"Not only is A.L. a blessing to Adair County, but he also impacts the entire region through his involvement with the nonprofit PRIDE organization," said PRIDE's Karen Engle. "We appreciate A.L. for his guidance of PRIDE's campaign to promote environmental cleanup and education efforts in 38 counties of southern and eastern Kentucky."

"It's wonderful when someone so deserving is honored for his service," added Engle. "A.L. is worthy of the highest awards for environmental stewardship, but such praise isn't what motivates him. Instead, he does the right thing as a steward because he cares so deeply for the environment. That devotion and passion inspires others, which makes him a truly exceptional leader." Since PRIDE began in 1997, Sinclair has volunteered as Adair County's PRIDE Coordinator and as a member of the regional PRIDE Board of Directors. He currently serves as the PRIDE Treasurer.

Recipient of Rogers-Bickford award

In 2006, Sinclair won PRIDE's Rogers-Bickford Environmental Leadership Award, which is named for the co-founders of PRIDE. This annual award recognizes someone who has shown environmental leadership in a PRIDE program and has demonstrated environmental stewardship for others to follow.

After retiring from a career with the Forest Service, Sinclair volunteered as Adair County's Solid Waste Coordinator for several years before it became a part-time position.

Innovative as Solid Waste Coordinator

He implements a variety of cleanup activities, including roadside dump cleanups, tire amnesty programs, white-goods buy backs and free tipping at the transfer station. He established a strong PRIDE presence in the Adair County Schools. Almost daily, he checks the county for illegal dumps and acts quickly to hold dumpers accountable.

The seven-member Environmental Quality Commission was created under state law to strengthen the public role in solving environmental problems in our communities and the state. The commission's web site is www.eqc.ky.gov.

PRIDE promotes "Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment" by encouraging and equipping communities to improve water quality, clean up solid waste problems and promote environmental education. The 11-member PRIDE Board of Directors meets monthly to establish guidelines for PRIDE programs, review applications for PRIDE grant programs and approve the organization's budget. The PRIDE web site is www.kypride.org.
