Being Green is a good thing

Being sure of what is Green is better
A Columbia, KY businessman speaks out in support of one of Adair County's biggest - and perhaps least appreciated - industries: Printing, Publishing, and Advertising

By Ralph Waggener
President of South Central Printing, Inc.

Saving the environment is a very good thing for every one to work on. Knowing what helps and what hurts is pretty important. I'm in the paper business and get to hear people rant and rave about saving trees.

Recently I had the opportunity to read [on paper] a report from one of my paper suppliers International Paper Co. on new controlled forest versus old growth forest.

It says improved forest management, regeneration of forest areas and selective harvesting has resulted in a net uptake {sequestration} of carbon from 1990 to 2005.This is because older, unmanaged forest loses their ability to sequester carbon.

Many climate experts believe that the reasonable management of forest offers one of the least expensive and best ways to fight against climate change.

Did you know? Three trees are planted for every tree harvested in the U.S.A.

Did you know that nearly 60% of all paper in the U.S. is recycled? In comparison, less than 20% of U.S. electronic devices are recycled.

Of the wood extracted from the world's forest, 53% is used for energy production, 28% is used by lumber mills and only 11% is used directly by the paper industry.

Again I'm in the printing business and I am biased in my opinion of paper use.

Our printing presses mostly use one and one half horse power motors that compares to a150 watt light bulb.

We can print 7,500 sheets of 11x17 paper per hour giving a yield of 15,000 8.5x11 letter size sheets per hour. We can also print on both sides of the sheet, unlike a copier or a laser printer.

The cost per copy just can't be compared to a printed sheet much less the GREEN SAVINGS you receive also you get to save GREEN MONEY to boot.
