News from the Adair County Bird Watchers Society

The Adair County Bird Watchers (ACBW) will host a Saturday Bird Walk, starting today at 7amCT, March 27, 2010, in the Corbin's Bend area of Green River Lake in Adair County, KY. The walk will start promptly at 7amCT, and we will return to our cars at approximately 8:30am-9amCT. The walk is open to all who are sincerely interested in ornithology, whether members now or not.

Thanks to ACBW members Terry Partin and Nancy Cozby, as well as Kentucky Fish & Wildlife's Brian Gray, we have identified a great location for the first-ever Adair County Bird Watchers bird walk. We will be looking for resident and migrating birds on public land at Green River Lake.

I went on a reconnaissance mission this morning and it looks like a good place for us to see birds as we have a choice of several habitats to explore - fields, forested wetlands, lakeside, and mixed coniferous/deciduous woods.

Just on my drive onto the property this morning, I saw a brown thrasher, an Eastern towee, field and chipping sparrows, and lots of signs of recent woodpecker activity.

Here's what you should bring for the Saturday Bird Walk:
  • Binoculars
  • A field guide to the birds
  • Comfortable shoes that can get muddy or wet
  • Some water and, Most of all, your curiosity and enthusiasm
You may also want to put on tick repellant as there are reports of early "attachments."

Directions:
(The street number of the Bird Blind in Corbin's Bottom, is 3363 Corbin's Bend RD, but internet maps on March 24, 2010, are incorrect. Directions below useful until internet maps updated -CM;):
  • KY 55/Campbellsville RD to KY 551/Knifley RD
  • KY 551 to Holmes Bend RD
  • Holmes Bend RD to Corbin's Bend RD - turn left on Corbin's Bend RD. (The sign for Corbin's Bend RD is missing, so - Corbin's Bend RD is immediately after C&D Storage. Another landmark is the sign for Jericho Landing which is immediately across Holmes Bend RD from Corbin's Bend RD)
  • Travel on Corbin's Bend Rd. for about 2 miles until it turns into a gravel road
  • t the first Y intersection, take a sharp right (Rd to left is Corbin's Bend Trail; the road is still Corbin's Bend RD. the road is a bit rough, but you will not need a 4-wheel drive vehicle - you'll just need to drive slowly)
  • Travel on the gravel road (through fields, woods, etc.) until you come to an open field where you see the lake directly in front of you
  • Park your car on the side of the road
I look forward to seeing you on Saturday, bright and early! Please do not hesitate to call me if you have questions. Wendy Butler Burt. (270) 378-3197.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Road to Corbins Bottom

2010-03-27 - Photo by Ed Waggener. Intersection of Corbin's Bend RD and Holmes Bend RD
A sign, newly erected on Thursday, March 25, 2010, by the Adair County Road Department, marks the intersection of Holmes Bend RD and Corbin's Bend RD. Participants in the first ever Adair County Bird Watchers' Saturday Bird Walk with ornithologist Wendy Burt, will turn here -left in the photo - and travel past about 3.4 miles to the rendezvous point. There's one tricky turn. Corbin's Bend RD takes a sharp right at the Y near the lake, at the sign, "Corbin's Bend Trail," approximately 2 miles from this point. New signs were ordered for the area by Adair County Judge Ann Melton, to serve residents, visitors to the Jericho Cliffs Laurel Trail, naturalists, and visitors to Corbin's Bottom. The church in the background is Charity Baptist Church, long a landmark at this intersection, the heart of the Jericho community, where Mr. Jim Riall once operated a general store.

Drivers to the Saturday Bird Walk today, March 27, 2010, will want to watch the road, but passengers may want to scope the Mountain Laurel along the top of Jericho Cliffs. The bright green shrub in the foreground will be filled with Mountain Laurel blossoms in a little over one month. Usually, the plants bloom as early as May 5, but sometimes as late as May 20. The scene across the lake is of Holmes Bend Boat Dock and Resort.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Turn right to Corbins Bottom

2010-03-27 . Intersection of Corbin's Bend RD and Corbin's Bend Trail
The trickiest part of the journey to Corbin's Bottom and the Saturday, March 27, 2010 Bird Walk at 7amCT, 2010, this morning, is a sharp right at the "T" or "Y" marked the street sign "Corbin's Bend Trail." at this point, Corbin's Bend Trail begins, to the left in the photo, and goes to a point a few yards across Green River Lake from the Mt. Carmel Boat Ramp. Bird Walkers will turn right and travel down the last 1. 6 miles or so of wooded, scenic Corbin's Bend RD to the bird watching site. The Adair County Road Department erected this sign on Friday, March 25, 2010, at the direction of Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton.
