Obituary: Luther Collins, 91, Adair Co., KY

Mr. Collins was a highly regarded business, church, and civic leader who leaves an an impressive legacy. He was a devout Christian and a leader in the affairs of the Columbia United Methodist Church. He was the owner of two major Columbia businesses, Collins Drug and Dreamland Motel. He was a longtime member and secretary of the Columbia Masonic Lodge. He was a foremost promoter of aviation in Adair Co. and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He leaves a large, distinguished line of descendants and a host of friends, who have benefitted from his many kindnesses, and who remember the wit and humor which warmed their lives.

Luther Collins. age 91 years, of 510 Burkesville ST, Columbia, Ky. passed awaySaturday February 27, 2010 at 6:15a. at University of Louisville Hospital Louisville, KY.

The funeral service will be Friday March 5, 2010 at 11amCT, at Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY,with Rev. Neil Janes the officiating clergy. Masonic rites will be conducted Thursday evening, March 4, 2010, at 7pmCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY Interment in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty RD, Columbia, KY. Visitation will be after 2:30pmCT, Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the funeral home.



Pallbearers will be his grandsons and granddaughter, Todd Thomas, Brian Thomas, Scott Thomas, Richard Thomas and Jeffrey Thomas, Kelley Williams, Shawn Williams, Patrick Williams, Jeffrey Embrey II, and Ashley Embrey

Luther Collins (1918-2010)

He was the son of the late Vander Martin and Lillian Cecil Shelley Collins.He was born at Glensfork, Adair Co., KY, on Tuesday, July 9, 1918, and died on Saturday, February 27, 2010, in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY, at the age of 91 years, 7 months, and 18 days.

Mr. Collins was member of Columbia United Methodist Church.

He was a pharmacist and was owner of Collins Drug Store from 1951 to 1986.

He built and operated the Dreamland Motel in Columbia, KY, a business still in his family.

He was a member of Columbia Masonic Lodge #96 for 66 years, during which time he held the office of Secretary for 40 years.

He was veteran of WW II and served in the U. S. Navy.

He was active in civic affairs and served as the Chairman of the of Columbia-Adair County Airport Board. He was leader in promoting the cause of airport improvement in Adair County.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Hindman Collins on April 30, 1996.

He is survived by the following:
  • Three daughters: Martha Sue Collins Thomas, New Salisbury, IN;Brenda Collins Williams, Columbia, KY, and Kay Collins Embrey and husband Jeff, Brandenburg, KY

  • One sister: Elizabeth Webb, Cincinnati, Ohio

  • Ten Grandchildren: Todd Thomas, Brian Thomas, Scott Thomas, Richard Thomas and Jeffrey Thomas, Kelley Williams, Shawn Williams, Patrick Williams,Jeffrey Embrey II, and Ashley Embrey

  • And 20 great grandchildren: Shelby Thomas, Zack Thomas, Josh Thomas, Hannah Thomas, Hope Thomas, Rebecca Thomas, Myranda Thomas, McKayla Thomas, Rhys Thomas, Nate Thomas, Courtland Thomas, Carlan Thomas, Luke Williams, Adam Williams, Nathan Williams, Lauren Williams, Logan Williams, Corey Williams, Courtney Williams, and Eric Embrey
He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Collins.

Memorials are suggested to the Columbia United Methodist Church and may bemade at the funeral home.
