Valarie Cooper, Jamestown, KY, American PTA outstanding student

By Dave Cazalet, Jr., SCC Director of Public Relations

Valarie Cooper, a student currently enrolled in second-year studies in the Somerset Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program, has been named the recipient of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Orthopaedic Section's Outstanding Student Physical Therapist Assistant Award for 2010. Cooper, who is from Jamestown in Russell County, will receive the award at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting in San Diego, California, in February.

This is the third year in a row that an SCC student has won the award. Barry Buchignani of Lexington was the 2009 recipient; Isaac Mills of Corbin was the 2008 recipient. Cooper will also be recognized by the Sports Physical Therapy Section at the conference.

Cooper is a graduate of Russell County High School where she swam competitively and she presently serves as a volunteer swim coach locally. She has acted as a mentor and volunteer in other sports-related activities, including participation in the KPTA-sponsored Kentucky Special Olympics' Fun Fitness Screenings, Shriners Hospital for Children's No Limits Sports Clinics, free sports screenings for rural Kentucky athletes, and the Somerset Community College Health Fair. Cooper co-authored a brochure touting the benefits of sports-related activities among elderly populations entitled Home Team Advantage: A Healthy Living Guide for Athletes in their 60's, 70's and Beyond and was published in the APTA Student Assembly's February, 2009 edition of the Pulse in an article encouraging student membership in the APTA.

Upon graduating from high school, Cooper attended Spencerian College where she obtained the credentials required for massage therapy with a 4.00 grade point average and subsequently obtained a license in massage therapy. She then applied to and was accepted to the highly competitive SCC PTA Program, where she ranks among the top of her class, both academically and technically.

In 2009, she was named the recipient of the James H. Anderson Award, a peer-selected award based upon the expectation that the recipient will make a significant and lasting impact upon the physical therapy profession.

She recently received a commendation from the Kentucky House of Representatives for academic excellence, community service, and her commitment to the profession and serves on the SCC PTA Program's Advisory Board. She was elected to serve as President of the SCC Physical Therapy Student Organization and Vice-President of her class and has coordinated many charitable activities in these roles. She served as co-chair for the program's fundraising efforts in the 2009 Georgia State-Marquette Challenge, a national fundraiser for the Foundation for Physical Therapy, in which SCC's Program was named the "Outstanding PTA Program" nationally. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honorary and serves as an APTA Student Liaison. Ultimately, Cooper plans to further her education and obtain a Doctorate of Physical Therapy Degree from the University of Kentucky.

Cooper was nominated for the award by Dr. Sam Brown, PT, who states, "Valarie serves as an excellent role model to students balancing academics and community service". The nomination was supported by program faculty Dr. Ron Meade, PT, and Dr. Steve Hammons, PT, and by classmates Tiffany Pelfrey Lavender and Jeff Tyree.

She is the second student in her class to be recognized nationally. Jeff Tyree of London was elected to the APTA Student Assembly Board of Directors earlier this fall.
BR>Somerset Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education. SCC has campuses in Somerset and London, centers in Clinton, McCreary, Casey, and Russell Counties.
