Remembering Christmas in 1954 in Columbia, KY It took all the family's income from tobacco and corn to just live and make the yearly farm payment. But missionaries from Lindsey Wilson - Miss Beverly Dotson and three others - were angels that Christmas in 1954 By Claria Rodgers I remember on December 24th 1954 as my daddy didn't have a lot of money. He did his best as there was 8 of us children at the time. We never got a lot for Christmas gifts. Some way he and mom would get us a toy watch or a coloring book and crayons. We lived on a small farm where we raised tobacco and corn. It took all we got out of that to live on and pay our farm payment once a year. We went to church at Hutchison. We were all faithful to God and the church. We would have our services at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. We had, I believe, women and men who were going to Lindsey Wilson college who were missionaries to us. They would come and teach our Sunday school classes. I believe there was two men and two ladies. We loved them they would teach us about God's beauty and love all around us. I can only remember one of the ladies Name. It was Miss Beverly Dotson. On one Christmas eve we were all hoping for Santa. We heard a knock on the door. It was Miss Beverly and the rest of the group. They brought us all new clothes. I remember my sweater, and other clothes as well. We all had new clothes as we really needed them. We didn't have electricity at the time. They gave us a big mantle lamp. We liked it so much. We could study for school so much better. As they were leaving they handed my daddy an envelope. It had 38.00 in it. We were so thankful for them and what they had done for us. We knew they had to be Angels sent from God. On Sunday we wore our new clothes to Sunday school. I will never forget the beautiful smile Miss. Beverly Dotson had on her face. I know now in my heart that she was grateful that she saw our smiling faces. I will always be grateful for Lindsey Wilson, Miss Beverly, and the other three people from Lindsey that made our Christmas, December 24th, 1954.God Bless you all. -Claria Rodgers This story was posted on 2009-12-31 14:04:46
