Three deaths on KY roadways during 2009 Christmas Holiday Kentucky has far fewer Christmas week fatalities in 2009 than same period in 2008. For year to date, fatality figure down by 52 By Lt. David Jude (FRANKFORT, KY) - Preliminary statistics* indicate that three people died in three separate crashes on Kentucky roadways during the Christmas holiday enforcement period (Thursday, December 24 through Sunday, December 29, 2009). Last year there were 10 highway fatalities during the same enforcement period. Two of the crashes involved motor vehicles and neither victim was wearing a seat belt. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Marshall and Shelby counties and the crash in Marshall involved the suspected use of alcohol. The other holiday crash involved an ATV in Pike county. The victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.Through December 27, preliminary statistics* indicate that 768 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2009. This is 52 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2008. There were 626 motor vehicle fatalities and 346 of those victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-nine pedestrians and 5 bicyclists have been killed. Eighty fatalities involved a motorcycle and seventeen fatalities involved an ATV. Seventy-three crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. A total of 160 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible. *These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas. Crash data for this report is generated from the Kentucky Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). This story was posted on 2009-12-29 09:45:55
