News from The Center for Rural Development

Thanks to a newly formed partnership with Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), The Center for Rural Development will expand its Rogers Explorers summer youth program and add a third host site for the program next July on EKU's Richmond campus.

In summer 2010, more students than ever in Southern and Eastern Kentucky will be able to develop critical leadership skills, receive hands-on training in math and science, and prepare to become the region's next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs.

The EKU expansion will allow The Center to place 90 Rogers Explorers - all rising ninth-grade students - on three of Kentucky's leading college campuses next summer.

The program began in 2006 on the campus of the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY. The program expanded in summer 2009 to include a second host site on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, KY.

Rogers Explorers is open to current eighth-grade students with an interest in developing skills in leadership, technology, math, science, entrepreneurship, and community service. Explorers spend three-days and two nights on a college campus participating in hands-on activities and working with professional college instructors.

The 2010 summer dates for Rogers Explorers program are: June 6-8, Lindsey Wilson College; June 9-11, University of the Cumberlands; and July 21-23, Eastern Kentucky University.

Applicants may specify their preference of campus location on the application form, but The Center cannot guarantee placement based on that first choice.

The application deadline for the 2010 Rogers Explorers sessions is March 5, 2010. Applications are available online at The Center's Web site at www.centertech.com. The application must be printed and necessary attachments mailed to: The Rogers Explorers Program, The Center for Rural Development, 2292 South U.S. 27, Suite 300, Somerset, KY 42501.

All lodging, meals, and program expenses (with the exception of transportation to and from the host site) are provided free of charge to participants.

The Center for Rural Development--the Center of Excellence for rural Kentucky and the nation--provides economic and community development programs to residents in a 42-county primary service area of Southern and Eastern Kentucky, and is home to several statewide and national technology-based programs. One of these signs could save your life or the life of someone you love

(ADV) FFA Address Marker orders may be placed at Four Adair Co., KY businesses
We are announcing a new option to make it more convenient for people to place orders and pick up signs puchased from the Adair County FFA. Two local businesses have agreed to provide a location for people to place an order and pick up their sign when it is finished. You can now place an order at:

  • Day and Day Feed and Pet, 1011 Campbellsville RD, Columbia, KY

  • M & W Milling, 510 Short ST., Columbia, KY

  • Hardscratch Grocery, 7289 Hwy 55 South Road, Columbia, KY. In the Glensfork Community of Adair County. Phone (270) 384-4671

  • Burton Ace Hardware, 314 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. Phone (270) 384-2696
We will pick up the orders every few days and call the person when the sign is ready to be picked up. Signs are still $15 and are a hot item for Chistmas since they fit perfectly into a large stocking. They are about the best gift I can think of for the person that already has everything and is hard to shop for. If a person wants a sign by Christmas, they will have to get their order in by December 15, 2010. which is the last day of school before break. Orders placed after this date will not likely be filled until after the New Year. -Kirby Hancock, Advisor, Adair County FFA
