Unemployment figures up slight in October 2009

Casey County counters 7-County trend, shows improvement

Unemployment figures increased slightly in October 2009 over the previous month in six of the seven counties in our area. Casey County countered the trend, with unemployment declining one-tenth of one percent there

Unemployment in 7-County Area
October 2009. U.S. comparable rate, 9.5%; Statewide KY, 10.7%; Lake Cumberland ADD, 11.4%; Barren River ADD, 11.5%
  1. Casey County, 10.1% unemployed
  2. Taylor County, 10.7% unemployed
  3. Adair County, 11.1% unemployed
  4. Green County, 12.6% unemployed
  5. Russell County, 13.3% unemployed
  6. Cumberland County, 15.1% unemployed
  7. Metcalfe County, 15.7% unemployed
Metcalfe County's 15.7% was fifth highest in the state, while Cumberland County, at 15.1%, was the seventh highest in the state.

All counties in the Seven-County area had dramatic increases over figures for October 2008, but it was toward the end of that month, in the last year of the Bush administration, when the bottom fell out of the world economy.

For figures for the entire state, see the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet PDF chart at Kentucky Labor Force Estimates Preliminary October 2009
