Thanksgiving 100 years ago, in 1909, in Columbia, KY Businesses closed at 10:30. There was a community service with the offering divided among the churches. The Columbia Hotel was open (where the Adair Annex is today). And, in the evening there was the weighing social, of course. By "Jim" The December 1, 1909 News, in a couple of no-words-wasted reports, told readers all they needed to know about Thanksgiving activities in Columbia: "The event was appropriately observed here. The business men of Columbia closed their stores and shops and at 10:30 the community repaired to the Presbyterian church and heard a most timely discourse delivered by Rev. B.M. Currie, pastor of the Baptist church...The church building was filled to capacity, no speaker in recent years receiving closer attention.(The mention of food reminds me it has come to light that those wishing to dine out that day in Columbia had a choice, as noted in the News in two brief reports: The first stated thatIn the evening, the ladies of the Columbia Methodist church sponsored a weighing social. A *what*? A weighing social: "The procedure was out of the ordinary. All who entered had to be weighed at the door, the weight of each person being divided by eight and the result was the amount paid. In this way the entrance fee ran from 5 cents to 30 cents, and the fee entitled you to refreshments...The receipts of the evening, $31.00."Have a wonderful Thanksgiving this Thursday, November 26, 2009.
