Great American Smokeout is today, Nov. 19, 2009 By Jelaine Harlow The Great American Smokeout is a day set aside to encourage smokers to quit for good, quit for a day or make plans to quit. By giving up tobacco, smokers take an important step toward improving their health, lowering their cancer risk and creating more birthdays! Columbia has several smoke free restaurants and businesses and some that participate in the smoke out each year. If you visit one of these restaurants say thanks for a smoke free environment. Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S. Cigarette smoking accounts for about 443,000 pre-mature deaths-including 49,400 in nonsmokers from second hand smoke.< This story was posted on 2009-11-19 04:57:46
