State parks offer free admission to veterans

In addition, fees to National forests waived on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2009

By Gerry van der Meer, KY Dept. of Parks

FRANKFORT, KY - All veterans and active duty military personnel and their families will be admitted free of charge to all Kentucky historic sites and museums that normally charge admission on Wednesday November 11, 2009, Veterans Day.

Kentucky Parks Commissioner Gerry van der Meer announced the offer, noting that the benefit pays tribute to military men and women's service to their country.

"We are inviting them to take a day to honor and reflect on what our service men and women have done to maintain our freedom and keep peace around the world," van der Meer said.

Van der Meer said the state parks offer was conceived in tandem with the offer of free admission to veterans to national parks. The Kentucky Department of Parks manages 11 historic sites located around the commonwealth. For a complete list and directions, please log on to www.parks.ky.gov.

The National Park Service is granting veterans free admission to national parks on Veteran's Day. Visitors to public recreation lands managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation will receive this benefit.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is also waiving fees at its national forests for veterans.
