LWC Concert November 13 will feature Haydn, others Click on headline for story plus photo By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Relations COLUMBIA, KY - Friday the 13th will be a lucky day for lovers of good music in the region. Lindsey Wilson College will host "An Evening of Elegant Chamber Music by Haydn, Ravel, and Shostakovich" by the Merling Trio. The concert will be 7pmCT Friday, November 13, 2009, in the Lindsey Wilson W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall, 155 Blue Raider DR, Columbia, KY. It is free and open to the public. The concert is part of the 2009-10 Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series. Based in the Western Michigan University School of Music, the Merling Trio features: violinist Renata Artman Knific, cellist Bruce Uchimura and pianist Susan Wiersma Uchimura. The trio has been hailed as a brilliantly distinguished group endowed with remarkable gifts of communication, magnificent precision and an impeccable blend of sound. "The Merling Trio is considered to be one of today's premier ensembles," said Phil Hanna, LWC director of library services and chair of the LWC Cultural Affairs committee. A truly international trio, the Merling Trio brings together musicians from Polish, Japanese and Dutch backgrounds. The trio made its New York debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1993, and it was named a finalist for the Naumburg Foundation Chamber Music Award in 1994. The Merling Trio has given numerous recitals throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Members of the Trio have performed with orchestras such as the English Chamber Orchestra, the Honolulu Symphony, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia, and the South Carolina Philharmonic, under the baton of such notable conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle and Christoph Eschenbach. Several contemporary composers have written works for the Merling Trio. Performances by the Merling Trio have been broadcast widely on television and radio, including WNYC-TV in New York, WFMT-FM in Chicago, Interlochen Public Radio and Peachstate Public Radio. In residence at the School of Music at Western Michigan University, members of the trio are also faculty members at the Schlern International Music Festival and the ENCORE School for Strings. Renowned educators, their students hold positions in major orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the world. The Merling Trio has also released a number of critically acclaimed recordings. Their first CD, a collaboration with conductor Dennis Russell Davies, featured works of C. Curtis-Smith and was released by Albany Records in 1995. Piano Trio Classics included works by Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, Schumann and Liszt and was released by Pamplin Records in 2001. In 2006, the trio released a recording of works by Piazzolla and Proto. Their most recent recording, Postcards in E, was released this year and features works of Shostakovich and Dvorak.
