SCC Clinton Center, Albany, KY, to hold 3rd International Day Tita Riggins, Val Lulak, Shannon Owens, Jo Murley, Keith McWhorter, Jon Frederick, Rita and Rick Matika, Sue Angevine, will make presentations By Dave Cazalet, Jr., SCC Director of Public Affairs The Clinton Center of Somerset Community College, 1273 KY Hwy. 90W, just west of Albany, KY will hold its Third Annual International Diversity Day on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, from 12:45pmCT to 3:30 pmCT The public is invited and there is no charge for admission. The festivities will begin with the Parade of Nations led by Clinton Center Student Affairs Assistant Shannon Owens who will be playing the trumpet. Area students will carry flags of various nations. Many countries and different cultures will be celebrated throughout the festival. This year, Tita Riggins, who is employed in the SCC BEAM Program in Russell County, will have a presentation about the Philippines. The session will include information about Filipino attire, history, products and dance moves. Riggins said that the presentation will allow for audience participation. Val Lulak will be joining Clinton Center Director Dorothy Phillips again to present artifacts from Latvia. Both Lulak and Phillips have ancestors who came from Latvia to the United States. Shannon Owens, who works in the Admissions office at the Clinton Center, will present items from Mexico and the Grand Cayman Islands. The new Clinton Center Cosmetology Program will present various hair styles and makeup from countries around the world. Jo Murley, the Clinton Center Librarian, will provide information about Guatemala including some of her collection of interesting items from that country. Keith McWhorter, an Albany, KY businessman and missionary who has traveled extensively, will be displaying his collection of items from Brazil. He will be available to share information about that nation. Items from the nation of Kenya in Africa will be presented by Jon Frederick, who teaches English and communications at the Clinton Center. For those who are interested in Greece, Rena and Rick Matika will be providing information about that country as well as Greek food items. Rick Matika teaches mathematics at the Clinton Center. Greece is the homeland of Rena Matika.If you are interested in England or India, come and hear Jim and Kaye Soma talk about their native lands. Plans are being made to have the Clinton County High School Spanish II Class, with Spanish instructor Sue Angevine, display Spanish artifacts which might include Pinatas, God's eyes, paintings, and video. Tentative plans call for a demonstration of the Henna tattoo art, an ancient Indian body art. The color is obtained from the Henna plant which is grown in India. It contains no chemicals or dyes and is temporary. Henna body art is often used for marriage ceremonies, festivals, and other ceremonies.Food from various countries will be available for tasting. Billie Shelton, the coordinator of the Clinton Center International Diversity Day, asked that anyone interested in participating in this year's event get in touch with her. If you cannot attend the celebration on October 20, 2009, but want to participate, bring your items for exhibit to her prior to the event. "I want to thank those of you who participated in our International Diversity Day celebration for the past two years. People are still talking about how really alive our library became as a result of so many travelers sharing experiences enhanced by exhibits," Shelton said. "Our plans are to have everything set up and running by noon that day since some of our students will be milling about on their lunch break. At 12:45 p.m., our celebration will begin." Shelton said.
