Sycamore Springs: Cumberland River rainbow a beautiful sight

Click on headline for story plus 2 photos

By Cindy Meyer

Saturday afternoon we took a short ride down Burkesville way, to the Bluegrass Festival, and eat some good food.

While we were there you could see rain coming in the distance; however only the few sprinkles that arrived were not enough to dampen the spirits of the musicians.

In the wake of the distant shower one of the most beautiful rainbows I have ever seen appeared on the horizon. Most attending agreed it was indeed unusual probably caused by the rain and fog coming off the Cumberland River.

Horizontal rainbow low over Cumberland River, Burkesville, KY

2009-09-20 - 214 Upper River ST, Burkesville, KY - Photo by Cindy Meyer. Upstream about 58 crow miles from Burkesville, KY, the Cumberland Falls creates a moonbow, but it can't be any prettier than the horizontal rainbow Cindy Meyer capured Saturday afternoon, September 19, 2009, from Dr. Joseph Schickel-Veterans Memorial Park in Burkesville, KY. "It was one of the most beautiful rainbows I ever saw," she says. The rainbow clung close the nearby river, adding to the enjoyment of a Bluegrass Festival in progress there. The park, the river, and the rainbow are all part of the reason citizens of Burkesville rightly proclaim it to be "Kentucky's Best Kept Secret."
