Indepth Update: Mystery remains on Millerfield boa constrictor

Cats saw it and just looked. Everyone thought it was huge Copperhead until they did Internet search. About: Charley Abrell hold boa constrictor, after its demise after it sought warmth of driveway at home of Ada and Dallas Neat of The Millerfields, Adair Co. KY

By Joni Miller, Jamestown, KY

My uncle Dallas was in the garden cutting down the corn when Ada went to the house to get something.

She saw the snake coming across the driveway up to the house. She said the cats just sat there and looked at it.

She thought it was a Copperhead or some other poisionus snake because of the slanted eyes and color and called Dallas to come and kill it.

They were not aware of anyone in the area with snakes and if it was a pet, it isn't anymore.

They didn't positively identify the snake until Saturday while doing some research on the internet.

The man holding the snake is Charlie Abrell. There are two running theories:
  • Either the snake had been out a while and had learned to adapt as they need warm temps and high humidity, (we have been short on this this summer)
  • Or that it more recently escaped capitivity and was looking for a warm place as he was seeking a blacktop area.
Hopefully this mystery can be solved soon. -Joni Miller, Jamestown, KY

PS: By the way, I love Columbia Magazine! I read it almost everyday...wish we had something like that for Russell Co.

All this raises a question: What else is out there? What other exotic pets are being kept which could get loose and cause problems? -EW
