Battle of Perryville, KY Commemoration Set For Oct. 3-4, 2009

From KY Department of Parks

PERRYVILLE, KY - The 147th anniversary of the Battle of Perryville, the largest Civil War battle that took place in Kentucky, will be commemorated October 3-4, 2009 at Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, 1825 Battlefield Road, Perryville, KY, is approximately 57 miles from the Adair County Courthouse in Columbia, KY.

The two-day event will include demonstrations of infantry, cavalry and artillery, along with authentic campsites, battleground tours and expert speakers. The highlight each day will be a 2pmET battle.

The re-enactment commemorates the most destructive Civil War battle in the state which left more than 7,600 killed, wounded or missing. The park museum tells of the battle that was the South's last serious attempt to gain possession of Kentucky. The battlefield is one of the most unaltered Civil War sites in the nation; vistas visible today are virtually those soldiers saw on that fateful day in 1862.

There will also be battlefield tours given throughout the weekend for $5 a person. On Saturday at 6pmCT, a Ghosts of Perryville program will be offered. Tickets are $10 a person.

The park will also be unveiling a renovated museum that features new exhibits, graphics, battle map, a video program on a soldier's life and more. The renovation was privately funded.

Admission is $10 per carload, $15 per van and $20 for a bus. Visitors should be prepared to walk by wearing comfortable shoes. They should also bring a chair and allow time to get to the park and battlefields due to the crowd.
